Entries for the 2021 Act Belong Commit PhotoVoice Competition are now open, with residents encouraged to snap a photo showing how they act, belong and commit to look after their mental health.

Participants have until 5pm on Tuesday 31 August 2021 to enter the competition, which encourages people to take a photo and write a short caption about their image, giving it a ‘voice’ and entering the competition online.

As part of a strong focus on positive mental health, the 2021 Act Belong Commit PhotoVoice Competition exhibition will be held from Friday 1 October to Tuesday 12 October 2021 to celebrate Mental Health Week 2021. Selected entries will be displayed at the Gary Holland Community Centre.

Photos submitted as part of the competition are required to illustrate an aspect of the Act Belong Commit theme which includes:
-    Act: Keep active - physically, socially, mentally, spiritually, and culturally.
-    Belong: Keep connected to friends, family and your community.
-    Commit: Do something meaningful, important and valuable to you.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said photos could be entered under modified or non-modified styles, with categories open to entrants of all ages.

“The Act Belong Commit PhotoVoice Competition is an exciting opportunity for amateur photographers to showcase their skills,” Mayor Sammels said.

“There are a number of cash prizes available and this year the exhibition will feature a new exciting category called ‘community’.

“This category is open to local Rockingham community groups, local services, sporting clubs and hobby groups to submit a photo showcasing how their ‘community’ embraces the Act Belong Commit message. First prize is $500 for their club.

“Entry to the competition is free, so I encourage as many people as possible to make a submission.”

The City would also like to acknowledge Healthway for its support of the 2021 Act Belong Commit PhotoVoice Competition.

“Promoting positive mental health through photographic storytelling is a great way to encourage young people to express themselves, and to engage in a meaningful way with the Act Belong Commit message,” Julia Knapton, Director Health Promotion, Healthway, said.

Images can be submitted electronically, via the online submission form. For details on how to enter and terms and conditions visit rockingham.wa.gov.au/photovoice
