The Mandurah Basketball Association is lobbying to local, state and federal governments to help fund more indoor courts at the Mandurah Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC).

They have started an online petition calling for an extension of the facility in the hopes it will give more locals, including children, the chance to play sport in their area.

Mandurah Basketball Association General Manager Brent Barclay said the current number of indoor courts is just not enough to cater for the increasing population.

"With Mandurah being such a growing community...the access to indoor court facilities is becoming a real strain, for not just basketball but for badminton, volleyball, netball and myriad of other sports," he said.

"It's also really limiting casual users being able to access indoor courts and facilities for their own fitness and recreation means."

Mr Barclay said children are missing out on sport and associations are unable to grow.

"This is something that Mandurah and the Peel region really, really needs," he said.

"We're going to get left behind from a sporting and recreation view point.

"They just can't access the facilities, they're missing out or they're having to travel vast distances to other shires."
